What is R-value?

R-value is the rating system used for insulation. The higher the R-value of an insulation product, the better it insulates. Fiberglass batts have an R-value of between 2.9 and 3.8 per inch, while blown-in fiberglass has an R-value of 2.2 to 2.9 per inch.

How much insulation do I need?

The amount of insulation you need depends on several factors, including:

I already have insulation in my home. Can I add more on top of it?

The answer to this depends on the condition of the insulation and whether the surrounding parts of the home are stable enough to support the weight of more insulation. It also depends on what type of insulation you have. Fiberglass insulation works by creating tiny air pockets around the home to trap warm air in place. Too much insulation can compress the fiberglass to reduce these air pockets.

Similarly, wet insulation has less thermal value because it has fewer air pockets. Adding more insulation won’t help — and in fact, it can make things worse if it traps wet insulation against wood or drywall, leading to mold or rot. If your existing insulation is wet or otherwise damaged, it may need to be removed and the area evaluated before you can replace it or add more.
